Propagation of solitary ion acoustic waves in inhomogeneous plasmas

A WKB solution for the propagation of a solitary ion acoustic wave in a plasma with a density gradient is obtained.     

Toward the Exact WKB Analysis of the PII Hierarchy

We develop the exact WKB analysis of the P _II hierarchy introduced by Gordoa et al. [ 5 ] in this paper; our particular interest is in the relation between the Stokes geometry of a higher order Painlevé equation in the hierarchy and that of its underlying Lax pair. An important observation is that Stokes curves of the Painlevé equation may cross, reflecting the higher order character of the equation, and in a neighborhood of the crossing point an unexpected degeneracy of the Stokes geometry of the Lax pair may occur along a curved ray emanating from the crossing point.     

Recent work at Hiroshima on drift wave turbulence and associated transport

Recent developments in the theory of drift wave turbulence and associated transport phenomena are reviewed within the framework of the weak turbulence theory. Basic physical effects leading to anomalous cross-field transport of particles and energies are discussed in detail for the case of collisionless electrostatic drift waves in a uniform magnetic field. Effects of electro-magnetic perturbations (finite-β effect), magnetic shear and toroidal geometry are also discussed.     

A time-decomposition algorithm for a stiff linear two-point boundary-value problem and its application to a nonlinear optimal control problem

An algorithm is proposed to solve a stiff linear two-point boundary-value problem (TPBVP). In a stiff problem, since some particular solutions of the system equation increase and others decrease rapidly as the independent variable changes, the integration of the system equation suffers from numerical errors. In the proposed algorithm, first, the overall interval of integration is divided into several subintervals; then, in each subinterval a sub-TPBVP with arbitrarily chosen boundary values is solved. Second, the exact boundary values which guarantee the continuity of the solution are determined algebraically. Owing to the division of the integration interval, the numerical error is effectively reduced in spite of the stiffness of the system equation. It is also shown that the algorithm is successfully imbedded into an interaction-coordination algorithm for solving a nonlinear optimal control problem.The authors would like to thank Mr. T. Binding states of Ga and Sn on W and Mo: Structures,evaporation field and its temperature dependence

Binding states of deposited Ga and Sn on the W and Mo substrates were studied by measuring the evaporation fields of the deposited metal atoms at various temperatures. Ga and Sn form two layers: an overlayer and an underneath pseudomorphic layer which directly contacts the substrate surface. The evaporation fieds of the overlayer Ga and Sn atoms were found to be the same on various crystal planes and significantly lower than that of the pseudomorphic Ga and Sn atoms, indicating that the binding between the overlayer atoms and the pseudomorphic atoms is much weaker than that between the pseudomorphic atoms and the substrate W and Mo atoms. The finding that the evaporation field of the pseudomorphic atoms on W is very close to that on Mo while the evaporation field of W is significantly higher than that of Mo was unexpected. Another interesting finding is that the field emission current from the (011) plane is not noticeably affected by the coverage of the mono-atomic Ga layer arranged in the superstructure while the current from other crystal planes covered by the pseudomorphic layer having the same atomic arrangement with the substrate surface is minimized. Furthermore, it has been found that the evaporation field of the Ga overlayer is lower than that of Sn, while the Ga pseudomorph is more stable than Sn pseudomorph on W surface at temperatures below about 100 K. The temperature dependence of the evaporation field was also examined and compared with existing models.     

Automated optimization of split ratio in capillary gas chromatography

An electronic gas-flow controller system called Advanced Flow Control (AFC), which controls not only carrier gas pressure at the column inlet but also the total gas flow including the split flow, was designed and evaluated. BASIC programming of repetitive analyses of standard mixtures under varied split ratios and pressure programs allowed automated optimization of those conditions for the desired column loading and resolution between adjacent peaks.     

Synthesis of bulgecinine: a new amino acid in bulgecins

Bulgecinine, a new proline type amino acid in bulgecins, was synthesized stereospecifically by use of D-glucose as a chiral precursor.
